'Amazing' - Ex-PL referee baffled by Everton Women v Liverpool controversy

Keith Hackett has hit out at the controversial penalty decision for Everton Women in their win against Liverpool on Sunday.

Katja Snoeijs scored from the spot to give the Blues a 1-0 win over the Reds at Goodison Park on 17 November, but the penalty should not have been given in the first place.

Fuka Nagano’s alleged foul on Honoka Hayashi happened outside of the box and the game-changing decision from the referee has drawn criticism from fans and pundits, with Jeff Stelling dubbing the call “staggering”.

Hackett, a former Premier League referee and PGMOL chief, is in full agreement and expressed his confusion over how the official got it wrong despite being in a great position.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Hackett said: “This is outside the line. Remember, the line is part of the penalty area but this challenge is outside of that.

“I’m in agreement with Jeff Stelling – that’s a very poor decision. I don’t even think there’s any contact there, so the referee’s bought one.

“The amazing thing is the referee is in a really good position.”

Nevertheless, Everton Women will have no complaints about the decision as it helped them claim their first WSL win of the season. They were winless in seven games before Sunday.

Brian Sorensen’s side will now look to build on that victory when they host Manchester United at Walton Park in the Women’s League Cup on Wednesday [20 November].

The Toffees lost 1-0 when they faced the Red Devils in the WSL on 29 September, but will be hoping to get one over on them this time.

Sorensen, who signed a two-year contract extension in April, has been under a lot of pressure this season and would have breathed a sigh of relief after the win against Liverpool.

In other Everton news, Goodison Park has been named as a potential destination for this player after a new controversy emerged.
