Tottenham have two of the best centre-backs in the world in Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and Jun’Ai Byfield has the potential to become as good.
The 15-year-old is already an established member of Spurs’ Under-18s team and has impressed many with his displays.
Having been the first choice in the Lilywhites’ youth side for some time, the young defender has also trained with the senior first-team squad.
While Romero and Van de Ven are Ange Postecoglou’s preferred pairing at the back, their consistent injury issues cause worry for the Tottenham faithful, with the Australian confirming that the World Cup winner will miss the game against Roma on 28 November.
While their absence wasn’t felt in the 4-0 win over Manchester City in the Premier League on 23 November, with Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies putting in a brilliant shift, the two have shown at times they can’t be relied upon.
The Romanian managed to quell the noise around him after the game at the Etihad, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the 22-year-old has had many underwhelming displays this season.
Jun’Ai Byfield could be the future of Tottenham
Tottenham have made an offer to Byfield to join the Under-18s in the upcoming campaign on a two-year scholarship, as per Lilywhite Rose on X [27 November].
The 15-year-old is said to be one of the best in his age group in England, and Daniel Levy could be pulling off a great move to secure the future of the North London outfit.
Spurs might have two quality centre-backs in their squad, but the team evidently lacks strength in depth in the position.
Davies has often deputised in the absence of Romero and Van de Ven, but the Welshman’s natural position is on the left-hand side of the defence.
While it might still be too early for Byfield to play a competitive fixture for the senior team, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the 15-year-old make the squad in the coming years.
In other Tottenham news, a contract update regarding Davies has emerged, with his current deal set to expire.
