Stephen McGinn has told Philippe Clement to “get to the bottom” of Rangers’ injury issues following a new blow to Tom Lawrence.
The Welshman is set to be sidelined for four to six weeks with a brand-new injury blow at Ibrox, joining Rabbi Matondo and Oscar Cortes in the treatment room [Official X account].
Clement has been dealt several injury blows this season already, with Danilo only just getting back to full fitness, Dujon Sterling struggling and Ridvan Yilmaz spending time out, which has all caused frustration.
Speaking via the Go Radio Football Show [7 November], McGinn said: “It’s not ideal, nobody wants to get injured but it is probably the biggest thing in terms of Rangers’ recruitment.
“With the injuries, Philippe Clement needs to get to the bottom of it in the summer, in terms of this big rebuild. You can’t look at someone and know they’re going to get injured. But I thought they would go and get players with more robustness.
“As a requirement to play for Rangers, you have to play 50/60 games. I know James Tavernier and Connor Goldson get and got loads of stick but they play 50/60 games all the time. That should be the minimum requirement to come and play for the club.”
Tom Lawrence hands Philippe Clement another injury worry at Rangers
A new injury to Lawrence should really come as no surprise, having missed 56 games for club and country since arriving in Scotland in the summer of 2022.
However, the injuries have been piling up for the Gers since last season. Cortes is an especially frustrating one, given he has only played 10 matches since joining the club on loan in January.
Clement is under immense pressure to turn results around at Ibrox, and rightly so, but he will struggle to do that if his squad continue to drop like flies before key fixtures.
The Belgian looks to have earned some much-needed respect after the Light Blues claimed a 1-1 draw against Olympiacos in the Europa League on Thursday 7 November, but Lawrence’s absence cannot be hidden.
The attacking midfielder already has three goals and two assists in the Scottish Premiership this term, becoming a key figure on the Gers squad, but he is back on the treatment table once again.
In other Rangers news, Barry Ferguson has shared a new Philippe Clement sack verdict after what he has heard at Ibrox.
