Pundit tells Clement to sell 'Brilliant' Rangers star to help fund new Ibrox transfers

Andy Halliday has told Rangers they should sell Jack Butland for around £10million, despite recent admissions from Philippe Clement.

The Light Blues manager insisted earlier in the transfer window that the England international was the only irreplaceable member of his squad, with the rest of the team available for the right transfer fee [TEAMtalk, 22 July].

Although Open Goal pundit Halliday admits the keeper has been “brilliant” since arriving in Glasgow last summer, he believes his sale could allow the Gers to make a few more high-profile additions.

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (31 July, 35:20) he said: “That’s another thing I kind of disagree on because Clement says the only one they cannot replace is Butland so they don’t want to sell him.

“He’s the one I would be selling. Even though he’s your best player, if you can get £10million why would you not sell him?

“Listen he’s been brilliant and ideally you’d keep him, but if you need a few transfers and you feel as though you don’t have the budget to do it and you can sell somebody for £10million or whatever it may be for £10million of £15million.

“See the age that Butland is, I know goalies go on a bit longer, but you’re not getting those sorts of fees for him in a year or two, so I don’t know why you would say he’s irreplaceable.”

Will Jack Butland exit Rangers amid summer transfer speculation at Ibrox?

Perhaps because of Clement’s admission earlier this summer, there has been little to no speculation around Butland’s future in Glasgow with most accepting the fact he will be a Rangers player come the end of the window.

As Halliday suggests, in an ideal world you would never allow the former Manchester United man to depart, but the Gers need money through the door so they can build a squad capable of catching Celtic this term.

While the likes of Todd Cantwell, James Tavernier and Connor Goldson will all command transfer fees, they are worth nowhere near the sort of fee Butland would garner if he was made available in the coming weeks.

It is probably too late in the summer for Clement to now change his mind and make the Englishman available for transfer, but his decision to publically state the keeper isn’t for sale could well come back to bite him.
