Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz could prefer a summer transfer to Tottenham over Chelsea because he will be guaranteed game time, according to Alan Hutton.

The 23-year-old had an impressive debut season in the Premier League under Marco Silva, scoring 10 goals in just 33 appearances having spent the previous season on loan with Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Muniz’s good form hasn’t gone unnoticed by other teams in the Premier League however, with reports from Brazil suggesting both Ange Postecoglou’s side and Chelsea have made contact over signing the forward [Thiago Fernandes, 3 June].

Although Hutton believes the Lilywhites would be better of spending money on a more consistent centre-forward this summer, he thinks uncertainty at Stamford Bridge gives Spurs the edge in the transfer race.

“I think it comes down to where he will play regular football,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“That’s how I looked at it as a football and normally back then, if a team was buying you it was because you were coming into play whereas now you’re looking to fill different quotas, back up, all those sorts of things.

“He did have a good season, he was a handful for defenders as well and that’s what it is probably going to come down to. At this moment in time with the way Tottenham are, you probably have a more realistic chance of getting regular game time.

“At Chelsea, you never know who they’re going to bring in moving forward. I just think if the money is available for Tottenham, can they go and get an Ivan Toney, a Dominic Solanke or one of these guys who will be there for several years and score an incredible amount of goals?

“That’s not to say that Muniz can’t as well, but if they could do that it would really take them to the next level.”

Will Tottenham and Daniel Levy sign Ivan Toney or Dominic Solanke during the summer transfer window?

Finding a new number nine will have been high on Postecoglou and Levy’s shopping list as soon as Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich last summer, but for whatever reason, Spurs have not yet signed an out-and-out forward.

Timo Werner can play there and the German has impressed in flashes since arriving on loan from RB Leipzig, but he isn’t that clinical presence that will manage to score 20 goals each and every season.

Whether or not Muniz is truly that man remains to be seen. He may have been inconsistent in the past but under Silva this season he has shown that he can be a force to be reckoned with, even at the highest level.

If Spurs were able to agree a sensible transfer fee, this could well be a deal worth pursuing this summer, especially if personal terms will be as easy to iron out as Hutton suggests.

In other Tottenham news, a player plus cash swap deal has been mooted for Spurs to secure the signing of Archie Gray this summer
