Pundit View: Everton fan footage could prove 'Problematic' for Dyche's transfer plans this week

Everton may find it harder to attract player signings before this week’s transfer deadline following recent footage of supporters, according to Michael Ball.

Ball, speaking in his column in the Liverpool Echo [27 August], claims potential arrivals may be put off after seeing the scenes from the weekend, when some Toffees supporters gave a barrage of hostility to their squad at Euston station after their 4-0 defeat at Tottenham.

The former Blues defender claimed isolated incidents such as these may give a false impression of the club environment being “toxic” as they attempt to attract new talent before Friday’s deadline.

“[The supporters] overstepped the line and their actions have attracted the wrong sort of attention to the club,” Ball admitted.

“Everton have already had to duck and dive in the transfer window and will want to strengthen if the right opportunities come along in the coming days.

“Footage like this can be problematic in that context – there is always a danger an isolated incident that is not reflective of the wider club or fanbase can make Everton look like a toxic place just when you are desperately trying to convince someone to join.”

Everton must turn a corner

Everton are back in a situation which seems all too familiar in recent seasons – the constant glimmers of hope followed by a crash back down to earth.

This has been the case throughout the summer with a series of failed takeover attempts, and has been the case on the pitch as fans were hoping to pick up where their team left off last season – only to be rooted to the foot of the table after two games having shipped seven without reply.

At some stage, as wrong as it is on the surface, it should not be such a surprise that it sometimes culminates in situations like that seen at Euston on Saturday.

Ball does have a point, though – it is hardly what the club could do with when there are, as it stands, three days of the transfer window remaining and as seen by the two recent performances, there is a lot of work to be done.

Once again, Everton find themselves in chaos – but a glitzy new signing could help them turn the corner they need.
