Report shares if Everton are close to signing South American defender

Everton remain in the hunt for Sevilla defender Gonzalo Montiel this week but nothing is yet close, according to ABC Sevilla.

On page 47 of the Spanish publication’s print edition [27 August], it was reported that there are still several clubs in the hunt for the defender, including the Toffees.

Borussia Dortmund are understood to have joined Everton in the race for Montiel, as well as Nottingham Forest, where the 27-year-old spent last season on loan and made 19 appearances.

But the publication said Everton nor their rivals are not yet close to getting a deal over the line for Montiel.

Everton chase World Cup hero Gonzalo Montiel

Everton are in pursuit of a right-back as the transfer window ebbs to a conclusion this week, with Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson both sidelined by injury.

Montiel is at an age profile and uncertainty over his future which fits the bill, with the 32-cap Argentina international reportedly available for £9m [TEAMtalk, 26 August].

He is a player who will always be remembered for scoring the penalty which secured his nation and Lionel Messi the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but he is also a handy defender who was able to pick up some experience of the Premier League with Forest last term.

Montiel was believed to be absent from Sevilla training on Monday as talk of a move intensifies, and he is certainly not short of options as he mulls over a potentially huge career decision.

Meanwhile, Sean Dyche and his side are assessing other alternatives, including primary right-back target Kieran Trippier, who has requested to leave Newcastle United [The Telegraph, 22 August] – the club must act to avoid further repeat of the defensive liability which has enveloped their opening to the new season.

In other Everton news, the topic of Dyche’s job security is discussed after a poor start.
