Ally McCoist told Vaclav Cerny there was “no excuse” for his missed chance as Rangers lost heavily to Lyon on Thursday (3 October).
Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports (3 October, 8:09pm), McCoist could hardly believe what he was seeing as Cerny somehow put Jefte’s pinpoint cross over the bar from barely five yards out at 0-0 in a game the Gers went on to lose 4-1.
The Gers had started brightly in their Europa League clash at Ibrox, but following Cerny’s inconceivable miss, Lyon counter-attacked at the other end and opened the scoring barely 60 seconds later.
McCoist, clearly confused by what he had seen, said: “I’ve got no idea [what he did there] – but there’s no excuse for that, remarkable miss, remarkable”
“There’s no excuse for that, I’ve got to say. Great pass, good save – just keep it down.
“Just keep it down and hit the target, it’s the easiest of tap-ins! Remarkable miss, remarkable.”
Vaclav Cerny misses chance to put Rangers in control v Lyon
Goals looked to have been coming right from the first whistle at Ibrox, with two attack-minded teams throwing numbers forward at every possible opportunity.
Jefte – playing at left-back – had arguably been the most dangerous player making runs into the final third for Philippe Clement’s side, and his peach of a cross deserved to be turned home by Cerny.
Cyriel Dessers may well have been the target, but his run to the front post drew defenders towards him and left the entire span of the goal open for Cerny, only to be left with his head in his hands.
McCoist – and the entire Light Blues support present in a raucous Ibrox – were also left with heads in hands, and Lyon scoring barely a minute later proved to be the ultimate sucker punch as they went on to run riot in a 4-1 win.
After a bright start to his Gers career, Wolfsburg loanee Cerny’s form has begun to tail off, and he’ll know better than anyone that his early, guilt-edge chance was the best way to change the narrative.
In other Rangers news, the club paid tribute to McCoist before kick-off after an award he received earlier this week.
