Connor Barron was torn to shreds by Billy Dodds as his error allowed Lyon to regain the lead against Rangers in the 4-1 loss on Thursday (3 October).

Tom Lawrence equalised for the Gers at Ibrox after Malick Fofana gave the visitors the lead before Alexandre Lacazette restored the advantage for Lyon minutes later and added a third in the first half.

Barron lost possession leading to the second goal with a blind pass across midfield, and Dodds held nothing back when reacting to the goal.

“Oh my word,” he said on BBC Sportsound [3 October, 20:18]. “What is happening here tonight? It’s brilliant from Lyon.

“Two quality midfielders on show here tonight – [Corentin] Tolisso for the first goal and then Connor Barron for the second.

“So we talked about the defences; now the midfielders are getting into the act. It is horrific all over – whether it’s slackness or bad passing.”

Rangers the masters of their own destruction against Lyon

Philippe Clement began his Europa League campaign in a winning fashion with a 2-0 victory against Malmo despite reservations that Rangers could get a result but, the ceiling came crashing down against Lyon.

The Gers and their French counterparts share one thing in common – both believe their side belongs in the Champions League, and the difference in quality could not have been more apparent at Ibrox.

Barron will be the smallest man in Glasgow right now. Lawrence had given the Light Blues a lifeline, albeit short-lived, and the tide of the match swung well and truly in the visitors’ favour once Lacazette restored the one-goal lead.

Fofana joined Lacazette in completing a brace at Ibrox and were in complete control of the contest from the nineteenth minute onwards, handing Rangers a much-needed reality check.

All the frustration that stemmed from the Champions League elimination at the hands of Dynamo Kyiv now looks blown out of proportion. If Rangers cannot compete with the best sides the Europa League has to offer, what chance would Clement’s side have among the European elite?

Clement must prove he can compete with the Gers on the European stage, the gap between themselves and Celtic already seems an insurmountable task to bridge, the side cannot afford to become passengers in Europe’s second-tier competition.
