Everton have made contact with Juventus about signing midfielder Weston McKennie, according to Tuttosport.
The Italian news outlet reports that the USA international is not in Thiago Motta’s plans next season but he is not interested in a move to the MLS or Turkey, with a top European league being his priority.
The Toffees are keen on the 25-year-old with the impending sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa set to help, with Juventus holding out for between £12.6million and £16.8million.
Everton ready new transfer after Amadou Onana sale
Central midfield is arguably one of the strongest areas of the pitch at Goodison Park for Sean Dyche, with options of Onana, Idrissa Gueye, James Garner, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Tim Iroegbunam and potentially Dele Alli too.
But with Onana on his way out [Fabrizio Romano, 13 July] there is a big gap for someone to fill in the team, and McKennie would come in and fit the way the manager likes to play.
He would likely return to the Premier League with a point to prove too after totally flopping during a loan spell with Leeds United, and that could motivate him further.
With big money coming into the club, there is likely cash to spend on upgrading the squad and finding a way to upgrade multiple areas of the squad it will make Onana’s sale easier to swallow.
McKennie may not be the most popular signing after his loan spell in the Premier League two seasons ago, but if Dyche wants him then it would make a lot of sense to get a deal done at the right price.
In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin is willing to sell a stake in the club in a brand new takeover update.
