Andros Townsend has urged Everton to stick with Sean Dyche in what could prove to be a difficult few years for the club.
Everton have endured a torrid start to the 2024/25 Premier League and are a club in turmoil after footage was released on social media of an altercation between the fans and the players.
Townsend, who was on the payroll for the Blues between 2021-2023, believes there is no better man for the Toffees than Dyche.
“It’s like groundhog day. You have a crap start to the season and then come the end everyone comes together and seem to get it going,” he said on The Monday Night Club [BBC Sport, 26 August, 55m 57s].
“They went into the summer positive but had FFP issues and had to sell, before starting this season poorly again – it’s just like a cycle. It’s tough for a former Everton player to watch and must be tough for the fans.
“What I will say is that there’s nobody better than Sean Dyche to be in charge while they go through this turmoil, having to sell players, prepare for the new stadium. Unfortunately, it’s probably going to be another season or two of survival for Everton.”
Everton need to put their faith in Sean Dyche
All of the goodwill that Dyche has built with the Everton faithful over the past 18 months has seemingly been tarnished in the past few weeks – for some, anyway.
The Blues sit at the foot of the Premier League after two losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur wherein they failed to score a goal and conceded seven.
Dyche has selected out-of-favour duo Mason Holgate and Michael Keane to start over new signing Jake O’Brien, prompting questions about his decision-making.
While the situation has destroyed all optimism heading into the new season, Everton fans will do well to remember the state of affairs at the club when Dyche began his reign in January 2023.
The Toffees were facing a relegation battle for the second consecutive season, and the 53-year-old secured their Premier League status during the 2022/23 campaign thanks to a goal on the final day by Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Last season, amidst two sanctions from the Premier League for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules, Dyche guided the side to a comfortable fifteenth-place finish and would have finished higher had it not been for the deducted eight points.
Everton have a bright future. Once the ownership is resolved and the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium is complete, the club will by that time have a stable long-term strategy in place.
This season proves to be another gruelling test for the Blues but Dyche has been here before and can once again secure the side’s Premier League status and lead Everton into the new era that will begin at the end of the season.
