Vaclav Cerny looks like a “little boy” when playing for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, according to Ross McCormack.

The Czech international scored twice for the Light Blues as they ran out 4-0 winners over FCSB in the Europa League on Thursday (24 October) to bounce back from their Premiership defeat to Kilmarnock.

Although Clyde 1 pundit McCormack was quick to admit he was impressed with the Wolfsburg loanee’s display at Ibrox, he believes Cerny is lacking the physicality to make a consistent impact domestically this term.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (25 October) he said: “I think European football probably suits him.

“A lot of games when he plays in the Premiership, I think he’s left a little bit wanting in terms of physicality. He looks sometimes like a little boy.

“But in terms of European football, I think that’s where we’ll see the best of him this year.”

What has happened to Rangers star Vaclav Cerny at Ibrox?

It does seem bizarre that Cerny can look so comfortable on the European stage only a matter of days after offering very little as the Light Blues were easily beaten by Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

The Czech winger is clearly an excellent player. At times, he can be a bit one-dimensional with the ball at his feet, but his quality in possession is there for all pundits and supporters to see week in and week out.

But he doesn’t have the physical power to bully an opposition fullback or compete with an imposing centre-back. His strengths are in the technical side of the game rather than the physical side and that can be an issue in Scotland.

Hopefully, he will learn to adapt and change how he plays in domestic matches so that he can have a bigger influence on the Premiership stage as well.

While being successful in Europe is a bonus, the league is where Philippe Clement and his side will truly be judged. If they let Celtic waltz to another title, the pressure will be on the Belgian and his squad immediately.
