'Why not?' - 'Legendary' scotch whisky figure admits Rangers investment interest

Billy Walker has admitted he would like to invest in Rangers, but only if he could have a say about the club’s direction of travel at Ibrox.

The Light Blues board are understood to be open to accepting outside investment, if they can find an interested party that they believe to be trustworthy [Andy Newport, 3 September].

GlenAllachie Master Distiller Walker has revealed he would be open to doing business with the Light Blues having been a Gers supporter and season ticket holder for the last 74 years.

As quoted by The Rangers Review (26 October) he said: “In reality, would I like to invest? Yes, if the circumstances were right. Would I be the principal investor? No. That would be for somebody else.

“I’ve had conversations in the past but in parallel with what’s happening in the football world, there’s also what’s happening in my own business world. There’s always demand. You’re always asked questions when opportunities come up and that’s life.

“I wouldn’t be against investing in the club. John Gilligan is an excellent man, he’s a top businessman. Any time there is a call to arms, John has been prepared to step up.

“But sure, I’m a Rangers fan, if the environment’s right, probably yes why not? But if I was investing I would want to have a say about the direction of where the club is going.”

Are Rangers close to securing new investment at Ibrox?

Rangers are desperate to close the gap to Celtic off and on the field in the near future and to do that, the Light Blues are going to need some further investment at Ibrox sooner rather than later.

While there has been a reluctance to sanction a full takeover, the feeling in and around the football club in recent times seems to be that there is a deal to be done if the right people are ready to take a minority stake in the Gers.

Walker’s comments suggest that he is not at all interested in owning the Light Blues outright. He doesn’t want to be the principal investor and that will likely appeal to the current Ibrox board who want to remain in control.

Whether or not the board would be willing to give up some control to the “legendary scotch whisky figure” remains to be seen, but they will know that is part and parcel of these sorts of deals.

It will be interesting to see whether or not talk of further investment proceeds any further than just the initial confirmation of interest from Walker’s side.
