Pundit View: Rangers man under 'Lots of pressure' behind-the-scenes after Bisgrove exit

Kenny Miller has told Rangers’ Head of Recruitment Nils Koppen that he is under a “lot of pressure” at Ibrox following James Bisgrove’s exit.

The Ibrox club’s CEO surprisingly departed the club out of the blue to take on a new footballing role in the Middle East, leaving John Bennett in charge to work alongside Koppen and Philippe Clement when it comes to recruitment.

Whilst the vast majority of the pair’s signings in Glasgow have been successful so far, Sky Sports pundit Miller has suggested that there is now an “obligation to win the league title” under this current set-up.

Writing for the Daily Record on Sunday (9 June) he said: “James Bisgrove would have had a big part to play in the re-organisation of playing resources, but the CEO has decided to go to the Saudi Pro League.

“That puts a lot of pressure on Nils Koppen as Rangers’ Head of Recruitment. But there has to be a collaborative process with him and the managerial team at the same time.

“There is an obligation to buy Cortes. There is also an obligation to win the league title. The players who come into the club need to be the right type and they need to hit the ground running.

“Rangers can’t afford mistakes and they need to compensate for the fact that Celtic have more money than them, but without being railroaded into deals they can’t afford.”

When you’re part of the Rangers set-up at Ibrox, you’re never not under pressure and both Clement and Koppen will know that is the case heading into the summer transfer window and the start of next season.

While the end of the campaign was disappointing from a Light Blues’ perspective, the management team were cut some slack because they walked into a mess left by Michael Beale. That will not be the case when next season rolls around.

The Gers have to get their business right and as Miller suggested, that responsibility now lies on Koppens’ shoulders primarily. He has to secure the signings to pull Clement’s side to the title, anything less and he will be criticised.

But the primary responsibility will lie with the manager. Clement needs to improve his record in Old Firm games and show he has the chops to be successful at Ibrox. These players have got managers sacked before and they’ll do the same again if the tide doesn’t turn.
