Tottenham should look to make the “statement signing” of Ivan Toney rather than pursue a deal for Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri, Alan Hutton has said.

Spurs are in the market for a new centre-forward this summer and Morocco international En-Nesyri is among those mooted with a move, though Manchester United and West Ham have also been linked.

Spanish publication El Mira (10 June) claimed that Spurs might have an advantage in the race if they were to offer former Sevilla loanee Bryan Gil up as a makeweight in the deal.

Reacting to the links in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Hutton said: “I’m not sure, I think he is a good player and played at a high level (but) I think if there’s an opportunity for him to go to West Ham and things like that where they’re probably looking for a number nine as well it might suit him.

“It’ll just be interesting to see, you’ll get a feel for what Tottenham are going to do and where they think they’re going to be in the future with who they bring in.

“If they go and make a statement signing and bring in an Ivan Toney, they’re looking to challenge. Not necessarily Man City but definitely top four and the likes of Arsenal and things like that.

“But we’ll know with who they bring in, I think they need to bring in someone like Toney.”

Tottenham need to aim higher than Youssef En-Nesyri

Tottenham are right to be looking for a genuine centre-forward this season because they still haven’t genuinely replaced Harry Kane yet.

Son Heung-min and Richarlison did a decent job of sharing the burden last term but a proper striker would help Spurs move to the next level.

But En-Nesyri might not quite be the answer they need. He scored 16 times in LaLiga from 33 appearances last season, which is a decent return – but only once has he managed more than that in a campaign.

Going for someone more established in England like 28-year-old Toney, who would thrive with the quality of wide men Spurs have, would probably make more sense even if it will cost more.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs already have a teenager better than Bellingham amid transfer speculation.
