Rangers decide January transfer priority already, loan deal on cards – report

Rangers are prioritising signing a centre-back in the January transfer window after John Souttar’s injury, according to the Rangers Review.

The outlet reported on 17 December that having lost Souttar to injury against Tottenham on Thursday and Neraysho Kasanwirjo for the rest of the season, reinforcements are in order.

Feyenoord loanee Kasanwrijo having surgery on a suspected ACL tear means he’s unlikely to be seen in blue again, with the Gers now looking at potential centre-back targets in January.

With Souttar added to the injury list and now expected to be out until the new year, the club have made central defence their key January target, with a loan deal possible.

Rangers will struggle to find John Souttar stop-gap in January

Losing Souttar – arguably the Bears’ best player so far this season – so early on in the first of two crucial matches will have been a crushing blow for Clement, but his back-ups have stood tall since.

Robin Propper and Leon Balogun saw out the rest of an impressive 1-1 draw with Spurs and started against Celtic in Sunday’s League Cup Final as their partnership develops in Souttar’s absence.

However, this duo – with only youngsters Leon King and Clinton Nsiala as cover – won’t be enough if the Gers want to close the Premiership gap on Celtic any time soon, hosting them at Ibrox on 2 January.

Before the winter window closes on 3 February, though, at least one centre-back must have been brought through the doors in Govan, and finding a player of Souttar’s quality certainly won’t be easy.

Only outgoings would be able to facilitate a big-money signing, but with the Scot expected back next month, it remains to be seen how high the Bears set the bar when it comes to finding a replacement.

In other Rangers news, Kasper Schmeichel could be banned after what he did during the League Cup Final penalty shoot-out.
