Ibrox View: Rangers must green light no-brainer exit, £3.3m deal could be on cards

St. Etienne wanting to sign Cyriel Dessers in January could be the perfect way for Philippe Clement to push on at Rangers.

Le Republican Sportif reported on 14 December that the Ligue 1 club are looking at the Gers’ number nine in the upcoming transfer window, with Dessers’ estimated price tag standing at £3.3million.

Dessers has fallen behind Hamza Igamane and Danilo in the pecking order, and while St. Etienne have a “strong interest” in the 30-year-old, his Ibrox contract running until 2027 could complicate a transfer.

However, with Dessers clearly on the periphery in Govan and Clement keen to strengthen his squad in January, selling the Nigerian to facilitate new arrivals is the best move for all parties.

Cyriel Dessers transfer could be the making of Clement at Rangers

Dessers’ slip down the striking ranks in recent weeks is somewhat astonishing, given that he is the club’s top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions so far this season.

Many of Dessers’ dozen strikes, however, came when he was the only option Clement could utilise up front, due to Danilo’s many injury issues and Igamane being a recent arrival from FAR Rabat this summer.

A relative unknown at 22 years old, Igamane has become one of the first names on the team sheet in recent weeks, scoring five goals in his last six games as an international call-up for Morocco looms.

Furthermore, Igamane’s versatility and superb form as a number nine and a left winger have not only provided Clement with multiple options, it’s also facilitated Danilo’s return to the first-team setup.

As a result, and with positions like defensive midfield still in need of strengthening in January, it’s clear that bringing in a £3.3m windfall by selling Dessers would be a move to benefit the club long-term.

The Gers are hardly awash with cash and have a poor track record in the market, but if Dessers’ transfer could result in another gem like Igamane being uncovered, selling in January is an absolute no-brainer.
