Michael Gannon shares Clement sack decision he expects Patrick Stewart to make at Rangers

Patrick Stewart is likely to give Philippe Clement time at Rangers but failure to beat Celtic in January would see him back “in bother”, Michael Gannon has said.

Rangers were cruelly defeated by Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on 15 December but a recent upturn in form has provided some form of optimism at Ibrox.

Clement has been under pressure for a large part of the campaign but any sacking after the defeat looks unlikely and Gannon believes the recent form will have actually earned the Belgian some breathing space in the eyes of new CEO Stewart.

Gannon, as quoted in the print edition of the Daily Record (17 December, pg49), said: ” Clement has earned some breathing space with recent displays and new CEO Patrick Stewart can now give him time.

“He needs to beat Celtic at Ibrox at the New Year though or he’s back in bother.”

Rangers were unfortunate at large to have been defeated by Celtic at the weekend, having taken them all the way through to a penalty shootout.

Prior to that defeat, the Gers had demonstrated a massive upturn in form but also with their performances.

However, that means little at Ibrox if they don’t get anything to show for it come the end of the season and with only three potential routes to silverware remaining – one of which looks hugely unlikely in the league – it is a fine line to walk.

Rangers already find themselves 11 points behind Celtic in the league, leaving the Scottish Cup and the Europa League as their two realistic chances of winning a trophy and even the latter will be an extreme challenge.

Nevertheless, another defeat to Celtic could be enough to see Clement sacked at Rangers and he will undoubtedly be aware of that.
