Connor Barron played the “worst ball in the game” to hand Lyon a second goal against Rangers in the Europa League, according to Ally McCoist.

The Gers hero reacted live on the TNT Sports match commentary on 3 October as the Light Blues midfielder made the “shocking” error of playing a blind pass into space in his own half on the half-way line, which was seized upon by Malik Fofana in the 19th minute.

Lyon broke forward and scored via Alexandre Lacazette and McCoist couldn’t excuse Barron’s error in the deflating 4-1 defeat.

He said (8.19pm): “It’s a really poor ball to lose isn’t it? Connor Barron plays a blind ball, it’s the worst ball in the game, he doesn’t look.

“One thing you would say, on his toes Malik Fofana. It’s a shocking ball into an area [and] he doesn’t seem him.

“He shows fantastic composure, very unselfish as well just to lay it into the path of Lacazette…

“But again getting back to the initial pass, how many times do you say it? You’re playing a pass blind into an area, not good, not advisable, and that’s what can happen. You get punished for that, especially at this level.”

Barron won’t be the first young midfielder to make a massive mistake in a big European game against strong opposition and he won’t be the last.

But on a night where the Light Blues needed to put in the sort of all-round performance they did in Malmo last week (26 September) and hope the visitors might be short of their best Philippe Clement’s men made it too easy for their opponents to settle.

After Vaclav Cerny missed an open goal with the score goalless Fofana took advantage to put Lyon ahead straight away, and although Tom Lawrence scored within minutes to equalise it was Barron’s error which handed them the initiative again which they never gave back.

Rangers shot themselves in the foot to go behind again.

On paper currently the Gers probably have no business winning this sort of game, especially with the form Rayan Cherki, Fofana and Lacazette were in on the night.

But Rangers have upset the odds in this competition plenty of times before and in the early exchanges they showed they could cause problems at the back for the Ligue 1 side, and after four wins without conceding they had some momentum behind them.

Had they been able to keep it tight at the back and take their chances going forward it might have been a different game, but aside from Nedim Bajrami nobody was at their best.

Barron has largely impressed since signing this summer, with performances which Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson believes explains why Aberdeen have been so upset and are not playing ball over the compensation fee.

But in what was arguably his worst outing for Clement so far the Scot struggled, along with too many others.

In other Rangers news, a Light Blues star has given up money to play for the club.
