Rangers were completely blown away and were hit by a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday (3 October).

Tom Lawrence’s fourteenth-minute goal was sandwiched by efforts from Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette, with the duo completing their braces on either side of the half-time break.

While the Gers showed plenty of positive signs during the defeat, the Ligue 1 outfit were just too strong, with Rayan Cherki running the show at Ibrox.

Ibrox News rated each player out of 10.

Jack Butland – 5

Did as well as he could to protect Rangers’ goal, making a couple of fine stops in between the sticks to make the deficit any worse, but could do little to avoid any of Lyon’s goals.

James Tavernier (Off for Neraysho Kasanwirjo 61′) – 5

Tried to lead as captain, pushing his team forward and creating chances. Had an effort on goal in the early stages, caught napping as Lyon scored a fourth through Fofana.

Robin Propper – 4

The defence was wide open for much of the game as Lyon’s front three ran riot at Ibrox. Both Propper and Souttar struggled to deal with the number of free-flowing attacks.

John Souttar – 3

Like his centre-back partner, Souttar did not deal with the Lyon attack well, even picking up a yellow card for stopping a counterattack in the first half. A tough night for the defence in general.

Jefte – 5

Added plenty of attacking threat down the left flank, helping Bajrami ahead of him, but was too slack in the defensive third, adding to the woes in front of Butland’s goal.

Mohamed Diomande – 6

Provided as much stability as he could, making up for Barron’s sloppiness in the middle of the park. Got stuck into plenty of duels and offered some attacking threat, but found it difficult with the rest of his teammates.

Connor Barron (Off for Nico Raskin 69′) – 2

Likely his worst performance in a Rangers shirt to date. Really struggled to deal with the quality in Lyon’s midfield. being at fault for one of the goals and may have been lucky to stay on the pitch after a strong tackle.

Vaclav Cerny (Off for Dujon Sterling 69′) – 3

Missed a golden opportunity in the first half, blazing high over the crossbar despite an open goal. Could not get back into the flow after and grew quiet as the game went on.

Tom Lawrence (Off for Kieran Dowell 46′) – 7

Pounced on an opportunity to score Rangers’ equaliser, unlucky to have an injury strike once again during the first half, which forced him off.

Nedim Bajrami (Off for Ross McCausland 81′) – 8

One of the brightest sparks during the Gers’ heavy defeat to the Ligue 1 outfit. Created multiple chances for his teammates in the final third and impressed with some beautiful trickery on the right flank.

Cyriel Dessers – 5

Used his striker instincts to act quickly for Lawrence’s equaliser, putting pressure on goalkeeper Lucas Perri before the Gers hit the back of the net. Struggled to get involved in any other way.

Substitute

Kieran Dowell (On for Lawrence 46′) – 5

Delivered a couple of sloppy passes after entering the field, grew into the game slowly as time went on.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo (On for Tavernier 61′) – 6

Did brilliantly well to clear a ball off the line, denying Lyon a fifth goal at Ibrox.

Nico Raskin (On for Barron 69′) – N/A

Dujon Sterling (On for Cerny 69′) – N/A

Ross McCausland (On for Bajrami 81′) – N/A

In other Rangers news, Darrell Currie says Philippe Clement was “furious” about a player development recently.
