'Have to' - Sky Sports journalist urges Rangers to sign 29-y/o forward in 2025

Dan Bardell has urged Rangers to sign Lawrence Shankland on a free transfer when his contract expires at Hearts, saying it would be “stupid” if they are not in the market for him.

The Scotland international suggested in November that he is likely to depart Tynecastle when his Hearts contract expires next summer [Edinburgh News].

This could provide the Gers with the perfect opportunity to step in and sign the 29-year-old after showing an interest in the past.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes a deal to sign the striker should be a no-brainer at Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “Yeah that is the market that Rangers are operating in.

“If a Scotland international is available on a free then Rangers simply have to be in the market – they would be stupid not to be.

“He would be a useful addition. They’ve struggled in front of goal at times, so I think they have to be in the market for him.“

The Hearts forward has been linked with a move to Ibrox for many months without a deal ever going through.

It now appears that a switch to Govan could be on the cards for the ex-Beerschot man, who netted 31 goals in all competitions last season.

Despite a recent run of poor form, scoring just three goals this campaign, his experience could prove to be an asset for Philippe Clement.

This could see Shankland become perfect competition for the likes of Danilo and Hamza Igamane, and may spell danger for the out-of-favour Cyriel Dessers.
