Rangers eye ex-PL midfielder in 'Stunning' double deal - report

Rangers are looking to bring former Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel to Ibrox, according to The Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via its online edition on Wednesday (31 July) that the club are also closing in on FC Twente captain Robin Propper are part of a “stunning” double swoop.

Philippe Clement and recruitment director Nils Koppen are rushing to finalise these deals before the Champions League deadline on Thursday (1 August).

Propper, who helped Twente secure a third-place finish in the Eredivisie last season, will replace Connor Goldson following his move to Aris Limassol.

Van Ginkel left Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem at the end of the 2023-24 campaign and is therefore a free agent.

Rangers eye Netherlands international Marco van Ginkel

Once branded as the next big thing in Dutch football, Marco van Ginkel’s career has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. His £8million move from Vitesse to Chelsea in 2013 was marred by a severe ACL injury just weeks later, stalling his rise.

Subsequent loan spells with AC Milan, Stoke City and PSV saw him having to deal with more setbacks but also earn two Eredivisie titles with Eindhoven.

Despite these hurdles, eight-cap Netherlands international Van Ginkel has proven his resilience and skill, making a return to his formative club Arnhem.

Clement, who has a keen eye for talent, sees potential in Van Ginkel despite his injury history. With John Lundstram and Ryan Jack departing, and Nicolas Raskin injured, Rangers are in dire need of midfield reinforcements.

Van Ginkel’s experience could provide valuable depth and leadership as the Gers gear up for a new season.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are in pole position to sign a player who Celtic now also want.
