Rangers 'frightened' after confirmed news on two defenders - pundit

Rangers are lacking numbers in defence as they travel to Celtic Park for the first Old Firm derby of the season on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admits that he’s not sure who Rangers will be playing at the back following Leon Balogun’s injury and Ben Davies‘ loan to Birmingham City.

Balogun, 36, was forced off just before half-time in the Glasgow club’s 6-0 demolition of Ross County with an unknown injury and is now a doubt for the game against rivals Celtic.

Rangers secured much-needed reinforcements on transfer deadline day, signing Albanian midfielder Nedim Bajrami from Italian side Sassuolo for £3.4 million and right-back Neraysho Kasanwirjo on loan from Feyenoord.

Rangers thin on the ground at the back

The two Glasgow giants face off in the biggest game in the Scottish football calendar with the current champions regarded as heavy favourites.

Celtic have won each of their three league games so far without conceding a goal whereas Rangers can take confidence from their impressive display against Ross County last time out.

“I don’t know who they’re going to play at the back”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I don’t know who’s playing at the back, I don’t know who’s going to be there. Souttar but I don’t know who else.

“I don’t know who they’re going to play now that Davies has gone because Balogun got injured.

“There might be something I don’t know but at the moment I’m thinking ‘Who are they gonna play?’

“I don’t know who but they’ll get the life frightened out of them by Kyogo and his pace, so whoever it is, they’ve got to be quick.

“I’m looking forward to it, hopefully, I’ll have a glass of Champagne after it.”

In other news, Reo Hatate is ‘better than O’Riley’ and will dazzle in new Celtic role.
