Rangers manager Philippe Clement and fan favourite Graeme Souness downplayed the importance of their heavy 3-0 defeat to Celtic after the game.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie dismissed claims that the game was closer than the scoreline suggested as ‘nonsense’, asserting that Celtic outplayed Rangers in every position on Sunday.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Souness denied that Celtic dominated the game, claiming the only difference between the two sides was the quality of the strikers, while Clement insisted that ‘moments’ let Rangers down in his post-match interview.
First-half goals from Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi, followed by a 76th-minute strike from captain Callum McGregor have given the champions a five-point lead over Rangers with just four league games played.
Rangers miles off Celtic in first Old Firm of the season
Rangers have had a frustrating start to the season, securing just two wins from their first four games and failing to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
On the other end of the spectrum, rivals Celtic are yet to concede a goal in the Scottish Premier League as they already look set to lift the title for the fourth time in a row.
“What a load of nonsense”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“There is not one player in the Rangers team that would get in the Celtic team, that says everything.
“In every position, Celtic are better than Rangers and that’s never been done. Over the last ten years you’d say there was at least three or four who would get in, but not now.
“It may take their boys time to settle, but it’s going to hard for them considering the level of abuse they were getting from the supporters after it.
“When they went back to Ibrox, there was supporters there waiting for them and it’s not nice, so it depends what kind of balls these players have got.
“Can they step up and play the way they should be playing? I think Rangers need to go back to basics, win the ball and get the basics right.
“They’re doing everything as individuals, they’re not playing as a team and the manager has to sort that out.”
