Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United will be “very close” to a Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach and subsequent points deduction after their summer spending.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it would be a “mistake of the highest order” if a publicly-traded company like United fell foul of the rules.

As per Transfermarkt, the Red Devils signed over £180million of new talent in the summer window.

The likes of Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte arrived at Old Trafford for bumper fees Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge of his first off-season.

In July, United announced a £71.4million loss for the third quarter (January to March 2024) alone – while revenues also shrank by £30million.

Man United will be ‘very close’ to PSR points deduction, says Wyness

Under PSR rules, clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over a three-year period.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Selling assets like McTominay, Wan-Bissaka and a couple of others will have helped.

“It’s the first time they’ve managed to sell over £100million of players for quite a few years.

“With them being a public company and having to report every quarter, you’d hope that a PSR breach could never occur at Man United.

“However, they’ll be very close.

“Hopefully they’ve got enough accountants in the building. It would be a mistake of the highest order if they were to breach the rules.”
