Rangers having concerns over form and fitness in defence could see Neraysho Kasanwirjo start against Aberdeen, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.
The Mail reported in its print edition (29 October, page 67) that Kasanwirjo, who played right-back in place of James Tavernier against St. Mirren last time out, is in line to make only his second league start.
Philippe Clement is sweating on the fitness of regular centre-back John Souttar, who missed their 2-1 win over the Saints, as well as Robin Propper, who was hooked in the same game after a poor display.
This could lead to Kasanwirjo and Tavernier starting alongside one another in the backline, with the 22-year-old Feyenoord loanee slotting in at centre-back for the Gers’ must-win match at Pittodrie.
Neraysho Kasanwirjo can stake his claim in Rangers v Aberdeen
Kasanwirjo has had to wait a long time to make his first Premiership start in Light Blue, with the Dutchman’s versatility arguably counting against him when it came to breaking into the first team.
The Netherlands youth international is equally adept on either flank of the defence as well as in the middle, and this has seen him become a regular option off the bench for Clement’s side.
Of his eight appearances in total so far this season, six have come off the bench, but his display against St. Mirren will give Kasanwirjo hope of establishing a consistent starting place.
That regular spot in the starting XI could well come at right-back long-term – particularly if Kasanwirjo is signed permanently and Tavernier departs in January – but for the moment, in the middle is more likely.
Clement would love to have Souttar – who has become a regular for club and country this season – back in the side, but if not, Pittodrie could be the area in which Kasanwirjo makes himself undroppable.
