Rangers player travels to foreign country to undergo medical as another Ibrox exit set - report

Jose Cifuentes has already travelled to Greece as he is set to leave Rangers and join Aris Thessaloniki, according to Tera Deportes.

The Ecuadorian news outlet reported on 9 August that the 25-year-old will undergo his medical and sign a contract to finalise the transfer.

Cifuentes has agreed to terminate his stay at Cruzeiro and will move to the Greek side on loan with an obligation to buy.

The Ecuador international will follow Sam Lammers, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, Connor Goldson and Kemar Roofe out of the door.

Tera Deportes wrote on X: “Ecuadorian José Cifuentes will sign with Aris of Greece, the team where his compatriot Kike Saverio plays and which is in the first division of that country.

“Cifuentes arrives on loan until December with the obligation to buy him. The Ecuadorian has already travelled to Greece where he will undergo a medical examination and sign his new contract.”

Rangers should never have signed Jose Cifuentes

Gers’ decision to sign Cifuentes in 2023 was a questionable move that ultimately failed to deliver the expected impact.

Despite his promising performances in the MLS with LAFC, Cifuentes struggled to replicate that form in Scotland.

His limited playing time and underwhelming displays highlighted a mismatch between his abilities and the Ibrox outfit’s needs.

The transfer was further complicated by the loan move to Cruzeiro, which seemed to indicate a lack of long-term planning or confidence in Cifuentes’ ability to adapt to Scottish football.

The subsequent loan to Aris Thessaloniki suggests that Rangers were eager to cut their losses and move on from a player who had failed to live up to expectations.

In hindsight, the club should have conducted more thorough due diligence on the Ecuadorian’s suitability for their style of play and the demands of the Scottish Premiership.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement’s number one priority has been revealed as more transfers are eyed ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline.
