James Tavernier has officially fallen out of favour at Rangers – his time at Ibrox is coming to a swift end.

The 33-year-old has lost his place in the side to Dujon Sterling in recent weeks and was left in the dugout again for the 1-1 draw against Dundee United on Saturday [23 November].

Ahead of the clash at Ibrox, Kris Boyd shared his belief that another Rangers snub would be “the beginning of the end” for Tavernier, and it appears the club legend is right on the money.

James Tavernier is no longer in the plans at Rangers

The Gers captain has had ample opportunity to prove to the Gers faithful that he can live up to his duties as a leader for the side, but as Philippe Clement heads towards his own inevitable exit from Ibrox, he appears willing to take Tavernier down with the ship.

Sterling is the future for the Light Blues at right-back, and rightfully so; Clement has experimented with the Englishman across the pitch, barring his preferred position, and the 25-year-old is ready to take the reins.

If any hopes for a successful Scottish Premiership campaign this season remained, they dissipated after the 1-1 draw with Dundee United and confirmed the supporters’ worst fears – this year will be a write-off for the Gers.

Therefore, with Patrick Stewart and Malcolm Offord arriving as new chief executive officer and club chairman respectively [Rangers Review], it is time to make the hard decisions.

Tavernier’s inevitable departure will be a sentimental loss for the supporters but necessary if Rangers are serious about closing the ever-widening gap to SPFL rivals Celtic.

The Englishman has been a mainstay in the Gers backline, but his performances have not matched his prestige – at 35, this is undoubtedly the start of a steep decline as he enters the final years of his lengthy career in Glasgow.

In the summer, he was not short of suitors as his exit was touted during an extensive summer rebuild, and this will likely be the case again whether it be in the January transfer window or at the end of the season.
