Keith Wyness: Celtic have landed guaranteed £18m windfall after confirmed news

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed Celtic are guaranteed to earn £18million from the Champions League this season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Celtic’s earnings from Europe could be worth more than four times what Rangers make throughout the campaign.

Celtic booked their place in the Champions League after securing the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Brendan Rodgers’s side will face Slovan Bratislava, Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta, RB Leipzig, Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb, Young Boys and Aston Villa in the new-look league phase of the competition.

But Rangers missed out on a place in the Champions League after they were beaten by Ukranian side Dynamo Kyiv in the third qualifying round.

That meant they have had to settle for a place in the Europa League, where they will play Manchester United, Tottenham, Lyon, Olympiakos, Union Saint-Gilloise, Malmo, FCSB and Nice.

Celtic to make four times Rangers’ European earnings

But Wyness doesn’t believe Philippe Clement’s side have what it takes to go all the way to the final again after their heroics two years ago.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Rangers will probably be getting about £4million from the Europa League.

“Compared to that, Celtic will already have about £18million guaranteed.

“They are getting more than four times the number roughly is what we are talking about.

“If Rangers were to go to the final again, they would be looking at around £21-22million from the new situation.

“Rangers desperately need that money, but I just don’t see them being able to compete to get there.”
