Chelsea have always expected to breach Uefa’s financial rules after learning they will not be able to register income from some of their behind-the-scenes sales.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the west London club will pay whatever fines come their way as a cost of doing business.
The Times reported on 28 August Uefa has confirmed clubs will not be permitted to register earnings from selling assets to sister companies.
Chelsea’s ownership group BlueCo – a consortium spearheaded by Todd Boehly – has made multiple transactions over the past year to help offset the club’s major losses.
The west Londoners sold two Stamford Bridge hotels to a sister company last year for a total of £76.5million.
They also sold their women’s team as part of a similar transaction in June this year, with the deal believed to be worth in excess of £150million.
Chelsea deals have never been permitted under Uefa rules
But Borson revealed those types of transactions have never been permitted by Uefa.
“It’s not a new rule,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I think the story is just a confirmation that The Times has managed to get hold of somebody at Uefa.
“But the rule hasn’t changed, they have never been able to use those sorts of sales without getting around some kind of loophole.
“But Uefa are usually very strong on this stuff in terms of rejecting the use of loopholes. United’s £40million Covid allowance the Premier League permitted, Uefa allowed zero of that.
“They are known for taking a hard line on these sorts of aspects.
“None of it’s a surprise and I don’t think Chelsea have ever thought that they would pass the various Uefa tests.
“I think they always expected that they would be in breach of those rules and will pay whatever fines they need to pay as a cost of doing business.
“I don’t think they will be surprised and I don’t think they will be concerned about it.
“Going forward you clearly don’t want to fail on a repeated basis and they do have some risk of that because the fines get bigger and bigger.
“They won’t want to do that, but I think it’s unlikely that they will be too concerned.”
In other news, Chelsea have agreed cut-price sponsorship deal.
