Ange Postecoglou was frustrated by John Brooks’ officiating as Tottenham claimed a 4-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday, Paul Robinson has said.
Spurs ran riot at the Etihad Stadium, with goals from James Maddison, Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson condemning the Premier League champions to their fifth straight defeat in all competitions.
The referee set the tone for the game on 23 November after dishing out the first yellow card to Yves Bissouma in the first 15 seconds, and the Spurs boss appeared annoyed by the treatment towards the opposition.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said:“If he’d have gotten sent off, it would have been a problem. But if a player likes a tackle like that, he’s got to be careful for the rest of the game. It’s a credit to him how he played while on that yellow card.
“The consistency from the referee… There were challenges during the game, especially from Manchester City players, and you could see Ange getting furious on the touchline.
“The opposition were making similar challenges and weren’t being punished in the same way.”
Tottenham secure impressive win over Manchester City
Many fans were utterly baffled to see Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed 4-0 in their own home stadium, but Spurs supporters are more than aware that their team is capable of exactly that.
Postecoglou has faced a lot of criticism this season, and rightly so, following defeats to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Ipswich Town, and wins against teams like Man City just add to the frustration.
Spurs are currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table, with six wins from their first 12 games but also have five losses to their name, showing why they’re not closer to the top.
The North London side have a real opportunity to become title challengers under Postecoglou but the inconsistencies in results need to be addressed before this can become a reality.
