Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed that Oscar Cortes is back in training ahead of the Gers’ clash with Celtic at Parkhead.

The Light Blues make the trip across Glasgow for the first Old Firm derby of the campaign on Sunday (1 September) as Clement looks to pick up his first win over the Hoops since arriving in Scotland last term.

While Clement will have to make do without new signing Nedim Bajrami against the Gers’ Glasgow rivals, he did confirm that fellow deadline-day arrival Neraysho Kasanwirjo could make his debut at Parkhead.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Saturday (31 August) he said: “Nedim Bajrami paperwork is not fully completed, so will not be available.

“Neraysho Kasanwirjo is an option for selection but has had limited time to train. Oscar Cortes is back in training, building up his fitness now.”

When do Rangers play Celtic at Parkhead and Ibrox?

Now that the summer transfer window has slammed shut, all of Rangers’ attention will be firmly placed on Sunday afternoon’s clash.

The importance of this game simply cannot be overstated as it has the potential to not only define what happens in the Premiership title race this season but also whether or not Clement keeps his job at Ibrox.

Pundits and supporters alike have suggested that a defeat against the Hoops at Parkhead could well mean that the pressure on the Belgian heats up in the coming weeks, particularly after Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League.

While the Gers board’s decision to hand the manager a new contract only a matter of weeks ago would suggest that they’re not planning to make a change in the dugout, things can change very quickly in the footballing world.

Hopefully, any such talk of the manager being under pressure or of potential sackings can be put to bed if the Light Blues claim all three points at Parkhead on Sunday.

An Old Firm derby win heading into the international break after a couple of last-minute additions on deadline day would certainly put the supporters in an excellent mood for the next few weeks.
