Rangers takeover: Keith Wyness shares 'huge' update on new investors

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers must “trust” a new ownership group to come in and implement a “dramatic rethink”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Ibrox club are “in trouble” after their concerning recent financial report.

Rangers released documents showing their accounts for the 2023-24 season on 29 October, showing that the club’s net losses increased by £4.1million from the 2022-23 campaign to £17.2million.

The report also revealed they have £1.7million cash in the bank at Ibrox, while rivals Celtic have £77.2million in their reserves.

Celtic also made a £13.3million profit across the year as they put Rangers further into the shade on the pitch.

Rangers need takeover to turn the tide against Celtic, says Wyness

Wyness insisted the Gers need “ground-breaking critical thought” to turn the tide against their Old Firm rivals.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This the difference between the two clubs now.

“That’s why we need to see a pretty dramatic rethink from Rangers. If I were interviewing for this chief executive role right now, I’d want to put forward a pretty dramatic plan for growth and innovation.

“It’s going to take some pretty ground-breaking critical thought, and that’s what Rangers haven’t had since Steven Gerrard’s time.

“They’re in trouble, but they’ve got a huge fanbase globally.

“Rangers have got to trust a new board and ownership group. That’s just what has got to happen.

“They’re attractive to investors right now, and they will be looking at Rangers because they are a big club with big potential.”
