Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the delay in Newcastle appointing new analyst Luke Dickson will be directly related to their feud with Man United.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed there is “bad blood” between the two clubs – who are now embroiled in a “tit-for-tat” row after Dan Ashworth moved in the opposite direction earlier this year.
According to the Daily Mail (31 October), Red Devils chief analyst Dickson informed the club he wanted to join Newcastle earlier this year – but in a new twist in relations between the clubs, he was placed on gardening leave until November.
That period is now up and the Magpies are closing in on formalising the 28-year-old’s appointment.
Newcastle and Man United were locked in a battle over compensation for sporting director Ashworth which was eventually resolved in July after negotiations which played out in the media.
Newcastle and Man United locked in ‘tit-for-tat’ war, says Wyness
Wyness insisted the Old Trafford club have tried to “make a point” by delaying Dickson’s move.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This can be common, it’s usually done as part of the negotiation.
“But this smacks as being part of a tit-for-tat in the Man United and Newcastle situation over Ashworth’s move.
“I think Man United are trying to make a point.
“Obviously, there was a bad taste left for everyone with Ashworth’s move.
“It’s normal to have a release clause or compensation.
“I’ve been in many cases where I didn’t want to stop their career by refusing to let someone go.
“But as I say, I think this situation is because of the bad blood between the two clubs.
“Gardening leave has even had a public mention in this case.”
