Rangers tipped to pull off unexpected defender signing - McAvennie

Rangers have been urged to bring in a replacement for the now-departed Ben Davies who has joined Birmingham City on loan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes Rangers will need to enter the market for a new centre-back now that Davies, 29, has left but admits he doesn’t know where they would get the money from.

Football Insider revealed (August 23) that Birmingham City have finalised terms on Ben Davies’ season-long loan move to St Andrews.

More players are expected to depart the Ibrox before the August 30th transfer deadline day as the club desperately try to recoup funds lost in their Champions League failure.

Football Insider revealed (August 28) that Blackburn Rovers are in advanced talks over a deal to sign Todd Cantwell from Rangers.

Rangers need to enter market for Ben Davies replacement

Davies has made 58 appearances across all competitions for the Glasgow giants since moving from Liverpool in 2022.

“I don’t know if they can get a replacement in”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“They haven’t got any money. Hearing about things, people that are coming in, they need a sugar daddy.

“They need someone to come in and spend money but I don’t think that’s going to happen before the end of the transfer window that’s for sure.

“I’ve got a wee feeling that they have something up their sleeve and somebody will come in and put money into the club.

“It is what it is, whether you like Rangers or not it’s a great institution and it’s good when you have competition.

“I want Rangers to challenge Celtic but I always want them to finish second.

“I want Celtic to win all the time and Rangers to finish second, that would be an ideal situation for me.

“Celtic need that challenge”.

In other news, Rangers fans stunned by Todd Cantwell fee as deal all but done.
