Rangers have failed to agree a deal with Chelsea to sign highly-rated talent Leo Castledine, according to Football Scotland.
The outlet reported via their website on 15 August that the Light Blues have given up on attempting to bring the Stamford Bridge youngster to Ibrox.
Rangers wanted to add a permanent clause into a loan deal for the 19-year-old but Chelsea were not in favour of that and discussions have reportedly been left “dead in the water” as a result.
Philippe Clement sees another Rangers target go begging
Castledine is set to leave on loan as there is little room in an incredibly bloated squad for the Premier League giants [The Athletic, 15 August], but it appears he won’t be heading to Glasgow.
He is said to be one of the “most promising” talents in the London side’s ranks [Football Scotland, 7 August] so it is perhaps unsurprising they aren’t looking to allow him to go permanently.
If Philippe Clement was that interested in bringing him in it is unclear why the Gers couldn’t have simply agreed to a loan, and if he now ends up at Aberdeen as a result it will be doubly frustrating for fans.
The youngster would potentially have been an answer at the troublesome number 10 position in Govan, where Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi are training with the B Team on their way out.
Tom Lawrence has largely been the preferred option behind the strikers for Clement, but despite some flashes of ability the former Derby captain hasn’t been especially effective.
Missing out on the Chelsea talent is another blow in an increasingly frustrating summer, but unless he was slated to make an immediate impact there are other priorities.
Outside of Vaclav Cerny and to a lesser extent Connor Barron the squad hasn’t been boosted much by new arrivals, leaving the playing staff weaker than it finished last term.
In other Rangers news, the Ibrox board could sack Clement this season to win over the fans despite giving him a new contract.
