Everton breach voluntary code of conduct as images removed - report

Everton have breached the voluntary code of conduct after using their sponsor Stake.com on a page on their website catered to junior fans, according to the Guardian.

The newspaper reported via its online edition on 26 September that two members of the under-18s squad were seen wearing the online casino firm’s branding on their jerseys and those images have now been removed.

Along with the Toffees, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Wolves, Leicester City, Brentford and Ipswich Town all removed images/links on their sites after being contacted by the Guardian.

Everton right to take immediate action as Guardian investigation exposes football-betting links

The Guardian’s investigation into the Toffees and other Premier League clubs for breaching the code of conduct regarding gambling ads aimed at children highlights a critical issue within the game’s commercial landscape.

By exposing this breach, the newspaper has underscored the ethical dilemmas posed by the deep integration of betting companies within football, particularly when it comes to influencing younger fans.

This scrutiny is pivotal as it not only challenges the clubs’ responsibility towards their junior supporters but also questions the broader implications of such sponsorships on youth.

Everton’s immediate action to remove the contentious images demonstrates some amount of responsibility, acknowledging the problem and taking initial steps towards rectification.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for stricter regulations or perhaps a reevaluation of the relationship between football clubs and betting firms, ensuring that commercial interests do not compromise the welfare and ethical considerations towards the younger demographic.
