Tony Cottee says who Everton will call for to hire if they sack Sean Dyche

Tony Cottee expects Everton to call on David Moyes if Sean Dyche is sacked after their poor start to the season.

Speaking on TalkSPORT (26 September, 8:45am), Cottee said that while he’s a fan of the job Dyche has done at Goodison Park, he thinks the 53-year-old needs to turn the Toffees’ results around fast.

Scrutiny over Dyche’s position has increased in the wake of Dan Friedkin agreeing a deal to take over the club, but Cottee noted the irony of hiring a manager like Moyes to replace him in the dugout.

He said: “You worry about Dychey as well – I’m a big fan, I think he’s done great job, but the pressure’s going to pile up, they need to get results.

“Hopefully the takeover’s gone through or going through, and they’ve got a fantastic stadium to come.

“But it’s quite ironic isn’t it, because obviously if Sean Dyche doesn’t do what he should be doing at Everton, who are they going to call for? David Moyes – I don’t get it.”

Would David Moyes be all that different to Sean Dyche at Everton?

Few managers in the Premier League know how to survive a relegation battle quite like Dyche, but one who does is Moyes and thus it’s not surprising to see the ex-Toffees boss linked with a return to the club [Graeme Bailey, 24 September].

However, after Dyche kept the Blues up despite being hit with two points deductions last season, questions will be asked over whether Moyes would bring much of an uplift to their current situation.

Friedkin’s takeover is not set to be officially ratified until November, and if Dyche has been able to pick the Toffees up off the canvas before then, the American will be hesitant to sack him immediately.

Dyche is only under contract until the end of the season, leaving Friedkin in a position to draft in a new manager to take the reins ahead of the Blues’ first campaign at Bramley-Moore Dock.

With ambitious replacements for Dyche already being mooted, it remains to be seen if Friedkin will pull the trigger before the end of the campaign, but it’s unlikely that Moyes is at the top of his list.

In other Everton news, a club legend has given his own sack warning to Dyche after what he said about Goodison Park’s crowd.
