Rangers star John Souttar avoided a straight red card after giving away a penalty against Hibernian, and fans cannot believe what they have seen.

Philippe Clement’s side limped to a 1-0 win at Ibrox thanks to a first-half strike from Tom Lawrence which was given following a VAR review after the linesman initially gave offside.

However, controversy arose as Hibs were awarded a penalty for a handball by Souttar after a lengthy VAR check, while Jack Butland was the hero yet again as he saved Mykola Kukharevych’s effort.

Following footage of the penalty decision emerging on social media, fans have questioned how the 28-year-old Rangers centre-back wasn’t sent off for his offence.

After a scramble in the box, Souttar’s attempt to block a shot from inside the six-yard box saw him raise his elbow to block the ball, giving away a penalty.

A similar incident took place in Motherwell’s 2-1 win against St Mirren just one day ago on 28 September when Dan Casey was given a straight red card.

However, the Rangers man avoided facing the same punishment, leaving rival fans seething as they analysed the footage on social media.

Butland’s penalty save rescued Souttar from the frustration of the home support, with the eventual one-goal margin in the game enough to see the hosts take all three points.

However, referee Nick Walsh and VAR official Kevin Clancy have since come in for plenty of stick from opposition supporters on social media following the incident.

Fans have been stunned by new footage emerging, questioning how the Rangers man wasn’t sent off as the decision was labelled “scandalous”.

Terrible penalty, but Nick Walsh tried to look for the smallest thing to get out of giving that penalty. He looked apologetic as he explained the decision to Tavernier, also surely it’s a red card?
