Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa could agree significant commercial deals if Manchester City are successful in their associated party transactions (APT) case.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider those clubs are currently partially restricted in terms of how they can consistently compete towards the top end of the Premier League table.
Man City have taken legal action against the governing body regarding the APT rules currently in place, with the club claiming the regulations are “unlawful”.
After a two-week private arbitration hearing took place in June, The Times reported on 26 September the lawyers acting on behalf of both parties have been notified of the independent panel’s decision.
The newspaper claimed Man City appear to have scored a significant victory in the case after a vote on an amendment to the APT system was dropped from the latest top-flight meeting on Thursday morning.
The Lawyer reported on 5 June Everton and Newcastle were backing the English champions to varying degrees in their case against the governing body, while Villa chiefs have previously spoken out against the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Newcastle, Everton and Aston Villa could benefit from Man City case
Borson suggested those clubs would be the “big beneficiaries” of Man City winning their APT case.
He told Football Insider: “We don’t know exactly what Man City were asking for, but let’s assume they wanted those APT rules largely repealed and deemed unlawful.
“The ironic thing is the big beneficiaries would have been Newcastle, Everton if they get bought by Friedkin and people like Aston Villa, clubs in that emerging group.
“At the moment, they are partially restricted in terms of what they can do because they just can’t get their wage bill high enough to compete with the top four on a consistent basis.
“Clearly, if there were no APT rules, you would see some more significant sponsorship and commercial transactions going through those clubs.”
