Rangers want to buy ace they watched at Euros who loves Ibrox club - report

Rangers want to sign Kenny McLean as they are keen to bring in more Scottish players this summer, according to the Daily Record.

The outlet reported via their website on 24 June that the Scotland midfielder’s arrival at Ibrox will depend on Norwich’s willingness to do business as he has two years left on his contact with a club option for a third.

McLean, 32, grew up a Light Blues fan and has previously told The Athletic how “special” it would be to sign for the club.

A deal to bring him in this summer would also reportedly require the Gers to offer him a long-term deal in Glasgow, if the Canaries’ asking price proves to be affordable.

Philippe Clement and his recruitment team are said to have watched McLean at the end of the season and then at Euro 2024 where he made substitute appearances in each of Scotland’s three group games before elimination.

Rangers look to add Kenny McLean to Connor Barron

Ryan Jack and John Lundstram’s departures as their contracts expired left a gaping hole in the central midfield area of the squad.

A move to bring back the former has been roundly dismissed while the latter is now in Turkey alongside Borna Barisic at Trabzonspor [Fotomac, 24 June].

Clement, Nils Koppen and company have so far sought new young players, including Connor Barron after his Aberdeen departure to start the restock in midfield.

McLean would be on the opposite end of the scale age-wise, and quite possibly in terms of cost as well, with the veteran having a wealth of experience with Norwich in the Premier League and Championship in England, as well as in the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren and the Dons.

Rangers
Rangers manager Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen are after Kenny McLean.

If a deal proves possible he would likely become the second Scotland international to return to Ibrox this summer having been let go by the club in the past, along with departing Motherwell keeper Liam Kelly who is likely to be the next man in [Sky Sports, 18 June], after being let go from the Rangers youth team in 2008.

But it surely won’t be easy since he was a regular for the Canaries last term, captaining the side for the majority of his 52 appearances in all competitions, so even if he wants to play for the Light Blues before he retires his club may not be so easily convinced.

In other Rangers news, terms have been agreed for a new behind-the-scenes arrival at Ibrox within days.
