Ray Parlour insists Everton badly “needed” their 2-1 win against Crystal Palace after a season of disappointment so far.

Two goals from Dwight McNeil gave the Toffees their first win of the Premier League season at Goodison Park on 28 September.

Sean Dyche was a relieved man after the full-time whistle, with Newcastle next up on Merseyside on 5 October.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (2 October, 08:29am), Parlour shared his verdict on the Toffees.

“Everton had a great result last week didn’t they,” he said. “They needed that”.

Everton could surprise Newcastle United

While the Toffees’ season hasn’t been up to the standards they likely expect of themselves, the game against the Eagles showed that they can get results.

Dyche’s future has had question marks surrounding it since the start of the 2024/25 campaign but despite the Friedkin group’s U-turn to buy the club, it seems as if his job is safe for now [Bloomberg, 23 September].

Everton used the summer transfer window to strengthen in the final third, but before the return of Jarrad Branthwaite, it was their defence that was the issue.

Iliman Ndiaye and Tim Iroegbunam have both shined so far this season and if the Toffees can perform as well as they did against Palace, there’s no reason why the same couldn’t happen against Newcastle.

If Dwight McNeil is used centrally once again, the amount of chances he’ll likely create is second to none and will be invaluable to the team.

It’s time to build some momentum and form.
