Rangers-linked Kevin Muscat may have his sights set higher than being a manager in Scotland, according to Vince Rugari.
The Scottish Herald journalist reported on 6 November that the Shanghai Port manager recently turned down the Australia job as well.
He’s understood to be a “progressive” manager and that’s something that clubs in Europe are in the lookout for.
Rugari wrote: “Twelve months ago, Muscat was one of two final candidates for the vacant job at Rangers. Rangers went for Philippe Clement, a three-time Belgian Pro League winner – and in retrospect, it was a mistake.
“Clement is now under pressure to keep his job. If Rangers continue to struggle, the axe will swing on Clement; as it happens, they face Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League on December 12, if he lasts that long.
“The question will then surely be asked of Muscat, but he may not say yes. Having recently turned down the opportunity to coach the Socceroos, Muscat’s sights may be set higher than Scotland. His resume is now seriously impressive. Muscat’s haul of titles in multiple countries is proof his formula can bring success in different cultures. He is the kind of progressive manager that clubs in Europe are increasingly looking for.”
Rangers must at least attempt to bring Kevin Muscat to Ibrox
Going for Muscat surely makes sense for the Ibrox outfit but convincing him to join may be a whole other task.
If he does indeed have sights set on a job bigger than the SPFL then he may not be overly keen to move to Glasgow.
That said, being a former player who has previously been linked to the job, he would have some emotional connection with the club and that could make things easier.
However, he would have to be sold on the project at Ibrox and thus far there does not appear to be a coherent plan in place.
Multiple backroom positions are yet to be filled and that does not give the impression of a club that’s being well run behind the scenes.
Talks still must be held with Muscat to see where his head is at and if he’d be tempted to return to Rangers.
In other Rangers news, Chris Jack has issued a claim on an end to James Tavernier’s career at Ibrox after what happened recently.
