'Really Exciting' - Pundit tells Clement Ibrox-linked int'l can solve Rangers 'Issue'

Stephen McGinn has admitted he isn’t surprised Rangers are considering a move for Tommy Conway and told the Gers the striker could help solve an “issue” at Ibrox.

The Light Blues are expected to be on red alert after reports emerged suggesting Bristol City were open to offers for the Scottish international having grown frustrated by his decision to not sign a new contract [Bristol Live, 11 June].

Rivals Celtic have been credited with an interest alongside Premier League sides and Go Radio pundit McGinn has admitted the signing of Conway would help both Glasgow clubs fill UEFA’s homegrown quota.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (12 June, 9:20) he said: “It wouldn’t surprise me that both are looking. There is an issue at both clubs with the quota for European football and he’s a young Scot and a really exciting young talent.

“The English championship can be a market that you can’t be competitive in, the figures on offer are huge. But he’s come into the last 12 months of his deal and he’s definitely one worth a watch.”

Rangers have primarily looked to recruit from abroad ever since Philippe Clement arrived at the club and while that has seen the Gers sign some impressive talent, it has meant that there is no longer a Scottish nucleus in the squad.

With Ryan Jack’s exit confirmed following the expiry of his contract, John Souttar is the only Scot to regularly play week in and week out under the Belgian, which will be an issue in European football next term.

Conway would not only help alleviate the Gers’ goalscoring problem, but he would also help ease the issue that is UEFA’s quota. That alone isn’t worth Rangers shelling out a big fee, but it could play a part in any transfer decisions.

If the Light Blues are able to strike a reasonable deal with Bristol City this summer, or even sign Conway as a free agent next, this could be too good an opportunity for them to turn down.
