Simon Jordan has admitted that he doesn’t believe George Downing is particularly interested in becoming the new owner of Everton.

Blues supporter Downing and fellow businessman Andy Bell are reportedly the current frontrunners as well as the supporters’ preferred choice to succeed Farhad Moshiri as the Toffees owners [Matt Slater, 8 June].

The pair are believed to have the immediate funding to complete a takeover at Goodison, but talkSPORT host Jordan, who is a friend of Downing, admits he isn’t convinced he is keen to acquire a controlling stake.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (11 June, 11:10) he said: “George without breaching any confidences is well known to be a massive Everton fan.

“As long as I’ve known George, he’s been very passionate about the football club but had very little desire to own it.

“The motivations behind the money that they lent was predominantly and explicitly for the development of the stadium so there weren’t challenges about renegotiating contracts with the developers.

“I don’t think unless there is a massive sea change, George Downing particularly wants to own Everton. That’s not because he’s not a rabid Everton fan, because he is, but I don’t think it is on his agenda of things to do. Now circumstances do change.”

Will George Downing and Andy Bell complete Everton takeover from Farhad Moshiri?

As Jordan himself admitted, circumstances can change and while Downing may not have previously been interested in becoming the Toffees owner, the collapse of 777 Partners’ deal may well have changed his mind.

From a fan’s perspective, it would be excellent to have two genuine supporters at the top of the club running things, particularly after Moshiri and his regime did everything they could to suck the life out of the football club.

Everton Farhad Moshiri
Farhad Moshiri must make a decision on an Everton buyer quickly

Ultimately, the final decision lies with the current Toffees owner to decide who he feels is best to sell his stake to and Moshiri has shown in the past that he isn’t always somebody who will take the most sensible or obvious decision.

Hopefully, he will finally see sense and move quickly to get a takeover completed sooner rather than later. It isn’t good for anyone at Goodison Park to be left in limbo like this, particularly ahead of the transfer window.
