'Really Surprised' - Pundit in disbelief at Rangers over 'Amazing Money' rival striker transfer

Rangers not trying to do a deal to sign leading striker Bojan Miovski from Aberdeen is a real surprise, according to Alan Hutton.

The ex-Ibrox defender reacted on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club on 19 August to the North Macedonian’s £6.8million move to Girona [Sky Sports, 15 August] to call it “amazing”.

The Light Blues have been linked to high-profile striker signings throughout the transfer window and were interested the Pittodrie star [Scottish Daily Mail, 1 July] but while Hutton accepts they would have struggled to come up with that money he can’t believe the Gers weren’t more involved.

He said (5m 45s): “It’s amazing, it’s amazing money. It’s deserved because he’s turned up week-in, week-out, he’s scored goals, he’s been a handful.

“I’m really surprised that Rangers and Celtic haven’t looked, even though could they afford that sort of price tag? Talking more from Rangers’ point of view.”

Rangers miss out as Bojan Miovski leaves Aberdeen for Girona

At this stage of the current window a signing of that size is clearly beyond the Light Blues when Philippe Clement can’t even get low cost additions in without moving players out.

The Belgian has publicly admitted he is stuck with multiple players he told months ago they could leave as the deadline approaches with his squad looking understrength.

If there was a point when Miovski was a possibility then it may have been last summer when Michael Beale was splashing out big money on Danilo, Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers.

Dessers is delivering as best he can once more but Danilo’s situation is causing concern [Kris Boyd, 19 August], and Lammers is long-gone to FC Twente.

Bojan Miovski
Bojan Miovski was a regular source of goals for Aberdeen but out of reach for Rangers.

Even so, the wrangling over Connor Barron’s compensation fee suggests that it may have been impossible to strike a deal with the Dons either way, due to the two sides’ complicated relationship.

After signing Hamza Igamane this summer it looks like there is no space to sign another striker without one leaving, despite the Moroccan having not even been named on the bench yet.

The only one who could feasibly be sold is Dessers but interest hasn’t led to bids [Rangers Review, 7 August] and losing the only viable option Clement has right now would be a risk.

Miovski is gone, and so now is Albion Rrahmani [Rangers Review, 18 August], while the possibility that discussions over a bid for Lawrence Shankland [Daily Record, 29 July] look less likely than ever to lead anywhere.

So fears in Edinburgh that a deal was on the way look unfounded, but concerns in Glasgow that the side will be left short this term are very real.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has delivered a strong response as a controversial player is mooted to come in and “save” the Light Blues.
