Report: Arsenal now interested in signing Premier League star who Liverpool were ready to pay £75m for
Edu is a big fan!
Arsenal and Liverpool could both be busy on transfer deadline day.
The Gunners need at least one new goalkeeper, if not two, while they are also on the market to sign a new forward before the window shuts.
Liverpool completed the signing of Federico Chiesa on Thursday, but they are attentive to opportunities on the final day of the window.
Now, the Daily Mail claim that Arsenal are eyeing a move for one of Liverpool’s targets.
Arsenal interested in Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon
Anthony Gordon is one of Newcastle United’s most important players.
The England international joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023. He had a slow start to his Toon career, but he stepped up in the 2023/24 campaign.
Gordon scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists for Newcastle last season, and his performances caught the attention of a number of top clubs.
The Daily Mail reveal now that Arsenal are the latest to express an interest in signing the 23-year-old winger, but that is unlikely to be possible on deadline day.
The outlet claims that Gordon is ‘set to stay’ at St James’ Park beyond tonight’s deadline. Eddie Howe’s side have already held preliminary talks with him over a new contract too.
However, the report reveals that ‘Edu is a big admirer of the 23-year-old, who features on a list of players identified as future targets, and they could make an approach next summer’.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Gordon in the coming months.
What happened between Liverpool and Anthony Gordon
Liverpool were involved in concrete talks to sign Gordon earlier in this window.
Newcastle were struggling to get on the right side of PSR this summer, and it looked like they had to make a big sale to avoid consequences.
The Athletic revealed that Liverpool almost signed Gordon for £75 million, with Joe Gomez going in the opposite direction in a separate £45 million deal.
However, just when it looked like the deal would go through, Newcastle pulled the plug.
That’s because the Toon got the money they needed through the sales of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton.
