Liverpool’s transfer window has come alive in August as they scramble to add to their squad before deadline day.
Arne Slot has now had enough time to assess his squad after being in charge of the club for more than two months and is likely to know his players a lot better than what was the case when he first joined.
In terms of incomings, Martin Zubimendi has emerged as Liverpool’s top target for the number six role with the Reds currently locked in talks with Real Sociedad to get the deal over the line.
However, it appears as if the Reds aren’t quite done in the transfer market, with reports from Spain suggesting they are interested in signing a goalkeeper with one eye on the future.
Liverpool applying pressure to lower Giorgi Mamardashvili’s price
Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has emerged on Liverpool‘s radar as the Reds begin to think about life after Alisson Becker.
The Brazilian is going absolutely nowhere this summer and his contract doesn’t run out until the summer of 2027, but Liverpool are keen to sign Mamardashvili on the cheap and loan him out until he’s ready to replace Alisson.
According to Super Deporte, the Reds are ‘perfectly aware’ of Valencia’s precarious financial position and want to take advantage of the fact that they need to make a big sale to sign the towering goalkeeper below his market value of £38m.
Liverpool looking to be ahead of the curve with Giorgi Mamardashvili move
Alisson is well and truly Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper and is one of the best in the business when fully fit, but the Reds look like they’ve identified a potential market opportunity with Mamardashvili.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, however, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons and turns 32 next year, so Liverpool are doing the sensible thing by scouring the market for a succession plan.
Mamardashvili has been described as one of the best goalkeepers in Spain by former Valencia goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya, who also likened him to Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
The 23-year-old was outstanding for Georgia as they made it through to the knockout stages at Euro 2024 and could prove to be a shrewd signing if Liverpool get a deal over the line this summer.
Michael Edwards has been praised for his transfer strategy over the years and with the Englishman returning to the club this summer as the CEO of Football, links to Mamardashvili show exactly why he’s rated as one of the smartest footballing minds on the planet.
