Report: Liverpool snub very late chance to sign £10m player, Gary Neville called him ‘useless’ on the ball

Liverpool have now wrapped up two signings this week having previously failed to secure new faces all summer long.

Arne Slot’s first transfer window as Liverpool boss was looking like a damp squib just a week ago.

Liverpool were the only Premier League team to open the new season without a new signing secured.

This week has been productive though and Liverpool now have two signings on board – although one won’t play for the Reds until next year.

Giorgi Mamardashvili has joined Liverpool from Valencia but has been loaned back to the La Liga side for the duration of the season.

Liverpool have followed that up with a second deal of the week with Federico Chiesa completing his move from Juventus.

Liverpool snub Premier League ace

The Reds have now rejected a late offer as Slot looks to keep his side together.

Nottingham Forest have moved for Caoimhin Kelleher but Liverpool have rejected the bid in an attempt to keep Kelleher at Anfield.

More details are now emerging and it seems that Forest tried to sweeten the deal.

The Athletic claim that Forest offered goalkeeper Matt Turner to Liverpool alongside cash for Kelleher.

Liverpool wanted up to £30million for Kelleher though and have snubbed the offer to take Turner to Anfield.

Forest will have been well aware that, whilst Liverpool have signed a goalkeeper in Mamardashvili, he will only arrive next summer.

If Liverpool were to let Kelleher go now, they would have had to find a replacement at short notice.

Forest attempted to throw in a ready-made replacement by sending Turner to Merseyside but Liverpool have still said no.

Matt Turner has struggled in England

Turner’s time in England has not exactly gone well.

Arsenal pounced to sign Turner from New England Revolution in 2022 having been impressed with his displays in Major League Soccer.

Turner arrived as backup to Aaron Ramsdale but was sold to Nottingham Forest for £10million just a year after his arrival.

The American just hasn’t settled in the Premier League and, whilst he is a solid shot-stopper, he just isn’t natural with the ball at his feet.

Turner has never looked comfortable on the ball and was even branded ‘useless’ on the ball by Gary Neville in a rather brutal assessment.

“I have got no sympathy for him whatsoever. It’s absolutely ridiculous,” said Neville. “He is useless with his feet, he has proven it time and time again. He still tries. I mean, the ball is put back to him with a decent pace, just put your feet through it,” he added.

Slot seemingly wasn’t keen on adding Turner and that has seemingly put an end to any chance of Kelleher leaving Liverpool this summer.
