Report: Arsenal could still sell £45m player in January despite him starting first two games this season

Arsenal are already thinking about the January transfer window.

The Gunners have done a decent job in the market this summer. They have brought in Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino while also turning David Raya’s loan into a permanent deal.

In terms of outgoings, Emile Smith Rowe has been sold, while Eddie Nketiah and Aaron Ramsdale are both set to join fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Southampton respectively.

Arsenal are still active on the market, but Football Transfers claim they have already planned one thing for the January transfer window.

Arsenal will try to sell Thomas Partey in January

Thomas Partey has started each of Arsenal’s first two games in the Premier League this season.

The Ghana international, who joined the Gunners for £45 million in 2020 (Sky Sports), is one of the best midfielders in Europe when he is fully fit.

However, injuries have really troubled Partey over the last four years, and that has made him unreliable.

Arsenal have now signed Mikel Merino, and the Spaniard is expected to start as a left-sided number eight. That will push Declan Rice to the defensive midfield role and Partey down to the bench.

Football Transfers claim that Arsenal have decided not to extend Partey’s contract, which will expire in July 2025. He can leave as a free agent then.

To avoid that, the report claims that ‘Arsenal could attempt to sell the Ghanaian in January’, when he will have six months left on his deal.

That will not be easy at all.

Why Arsenal are very unlikely to sell Partey in January

Partey will definitely have a number of options in the summer of 2025, but we can’t see any club trying to sign him in January.

That’s because foreign clubs can sign Partey on a pre-contract as soon as he enters the final six months of his contract – that makes more sense than paying a transfer fee to land him.

To add to that, Partey has more to gain leaving as a free agent in the summer than in January because he can demand much better financial terms.

Arsenal can try their luck, but we will be very surprised if any club tries to sign Partey in January.
